Wooly Fair shoots for the stars

NASA’s Space Shuttle program may be over, but the seventh annual Wooly Fair is shooting for the moon this weekend. This year’s do-it-yourself art carnival will be anchored by the Wooly Space Station, a structure of 21 pods, which individuals and organizations have designed and decorated to reflect their idea of space and the future. Daytime activities include human bowling, costume and mask making, moon buggy races and more. After 8 p.m. the festival becomes Wild and Wooly, with live music, spontaneous theater and out-of-this-world attire.

When: Saturday, July 30, 2 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The imaginary world of ‘Quidam’

The latest arena show from Cirque du Soleil arrived in Providence Wednesday, and will continue with shows through this Sunday. Although ‘Quidam’ first premiered under a big top in Montral in 1996, the show has now been adapted to be performed in arenas throughout the continent. A cast of 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters will tell the story of young Zoé, a bored girl who is ignored by her parents. She escapes her apathetic life by slipping into the world of ‘Quidam,’ a place of imagination where Zoé is encouraged to free her soul.

When: Thursday, July 28, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30, 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, July 31, 1 and 5 p.m.

Philharmonic heats up

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra returns to WaterFire once again to present Philharmonic on Fire! in Turk’s Head Plaza. During Saturday’s full lighting, roughly 3,000 chairs will be set up in the plaza for audience members to listen to the orchestra’s concert, which includes Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” excerpts from Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” and Mendelssohn’s Scherzo from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In addition, the orchestra will welcome soprano Diana McVey for selections fro Dvorak, Puccini and more.

Free day at R.I. parks and beaches

The annual Governor’s Bay Day will be held this Sunday at state beaches and parks across Rhode Island. Luring people to the parks and beaches with free parking, the day will include fun for all ages. Activities include free sailing trips and a neighborhood barbecue at India Point Park; team check-in for the Rhode Island Great Outdoor Pursuit at Brenton Point, Colt State Park and Roger Wheeler State Beach; and live music, contests, educational and interactive demonstrations and more at other locations around the Ocean State.

Racing to raise money

This Saturday and Sunday, head down to the waterfront in East Greenwich to view the third annual East Greenwich Yacht Club Regatta. Offering opportunities for all levels, the regatta begins with a race on Saturday for Spinnaker, non-Spinnaker and Family classes. In the evening, all are welcome to attend a deck party to celebrate the winners and raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the beneficiary of this year’s regatta. An all-ages dinghy regatta for Laser, Laser Radial and Club 420s is on Sunday, with scoring by age group.

Dance companies gather for Great Friends

Several dance companies from around the country have been invited by Newport’s own Island Moving Co. to participate in the Great Friends Dance Festival. The list of dance companies includes Amaranth Contemporary Dance with Scott Putman, RoxanneLola/Movement Theatre and Pasadena Dance Theatre among others. The performances are different each night, and include choreographer talkbacks after each. The two-week festival concludes this weekend with six unique performances held between Thursday and Sunday.

When: Thursday, July 28, and Sunday, July 31, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Wine tasting on top of the Peerless

Gracie’s, a restaurant in downtown Providence, will open its rooftop garden on the Peerless Building for Sunday’s “Wines of the World, Grand Summer Tasting” event. The inaugural event will allow guests to take in the Providence skyline at sunset while sampling from 50 wines hailing from wine regions around the world. In addition to the wines, the Berkshire Brewing Co. will offer artisan craft beer selections for tasting and DonQ Rum Distillery will lead a tasting of spirits. Live entertainment and a variety of hors d’oeuvres will also be provided for the evening.

Art exhibit takes to the fences

The members of the Bristol Art Museum and Portsmouth Art Guild will host the fifth annual Art al Fresco event in front of Linden Place Museum this Sunday. The artwork from more than 30 regional artists will be displayed along the iron fence. Visitors are invited to stroll down the sidewalk in front of Linden Place to view the pieces, which make use of a variety of media including acrylics, watercolors and more. In case of inclement weather, the local artists’ exhibit and sale will be moved to the following Sunday, Aug. 7.

Browse history at Hearthside

What could be a more suitable backdrop for an antiques fair than the grounds of a historic house? This Sunday, the Friends of Hearthside will host its third annual antiques fair at the 200 year-old Hearthside House set along the scenic Great Road in Lincoln. Volunteers in period dress will wander the grounds to tell visitors about the history of the house as they browse fine antiques and collectibles. The fair will additionally include blacksmithing and wheelwright demonstrations at the adjacent Hannaway Blacksmith Shop.

Bazaar to support indigenous cultures

Cultural Survival is a nonprofit organization that hosts fundraising bazaars around the region to support indigenous communities. The ninth annual Cultural Survival Summer Bazaar will be held in Tiverton Four Corners on the lawn of the Soule-Seabury House. Attendees will have the opportunity to brose handcrafts including Kenyan wood carvings, hand-woven rugs, jewelry, clothing and other offerings from a variety of indigenous peoples while listening to Ecuadorian and Native American music and sampling Thai and Wampanoag food.

When: Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
