fusionworks fall concert Fusionworks
Fusionworks' Annual Fall Concert
November 20 - 21, 2009

Fusionworks Dance Company offers the perfect experience for both the dance aficionado, who attends several performances each year, and the novice who has not yet seen live dance. Do you like to draw your own conclusions or would you rather have a peek into the process? No matter which kind of person you are Fusionworks offers the perfect performance experience for you.

Join Fusionworks on Saturday evening for the extremely popular Unwrapped concert for the unabashedly curious. Deb Meunier will give you a behind-the-scenes peek at the entire concert process. Through introductions to each of the dances she explains the choreography, costumes, music and even technical information. If you would like to watch the dances and draw your own conclusions then Friday's traditional concert is a perfect fit for you.

Each concert will feature the Rhode Island premiere of international choreographer Pascal Rioult's Wien danced to the music of Maurice Ravel. Faithful to Ravel's intentions, Wien is a fantastic and fatal swirling of tragic dimensions. The Viennese waltz, the very image of social refinement, becomes the symbol of a disintegrating society taken into a whirlpool of violence and humiliation. Wein has been performed across the globe and now Fusionworks will bring it to Rhode Island.

"Creatures and Relics," Works from Two Emerging Artists
November 19 - December 31, 2009

Artists' Exchange is pleased to present "Creatures and Relics," a gallery show featuring the works of two up and coming artists, sculptor Christian Quijano and photographer Justin Lawrence Oliver. Artists' Exchange will open its gallery doors on Thursday, November 19, 2009 for an opening reception from 6 to 8 pm.

Christian E. Quijano, of Smithfield, is a young artist with autism. He has been experimenting with many arts media since he was very young, developing a passion for working with clay from the age of two. Irma Rodriguez, Quijano's mother, says, "he can recreate in clay almost anything he sees with amazing details and in a very short period of time, at times in minutes." When he was six years old he made ten elephants, inspired by the friendly creatures he saw in "Dumbo."

Quijano will be joined by photographer Justin Lawrence Oliver of Providence..

While his father was an avid travel photographer and had a darkroom in his basement, Oliver's interest in photography came in adulthood, springing from an interest specifically in documenting historically and culturally significant buildings in danger of demolition.

Conversely, manufactured materials-ranging from audiotape to flip-flop sandals-may be configured to resemble natural phenomena such as a cascading waterfall or the Caribbean Sea. A number of the featured works were acquired recently and are being exhibited for the first time.

Avish Khebrehzadeh: Backyard and Other Stories
Friday, October 30 - Sunday March 28th, 2010

Avish Khebrehzadeh's (Iranian, b. 1969) hand- drawn animations and large-scale drawings are praised for their poetic sensibility and dreamy, timeless atmosphere achieved through the most economical means. Their usual motifs-human figures performing simple activities, iconic animals, and excerpts of nature against neutral backgrounds-are made of elemental shapes which are softly drawn with just a pencil, olive oil, and resin. The artist's inspiration stems from childhood memories, everyday life, literature, and art history. The contemplative and somewhat mysterious nature of Khebrehzadeh's work allows for a variety of readings and invites the viewer's participation though his/ her own imagination. Along with the selection of Khebrehzadeh's single channel videos, the exhibition will include her work Backyard (2005/2006), large- scale video projection on a three panel drawing from the Museum collection.

Hello, Cello
November 21, 2009

Music Director Larry Rachliff and the Orchestra welcome back acclaimed Cellist Alban Gerhardt after his triumphant performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Philharmonic last season. Mr. Gerhardt will perform Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor, op. 85. The program includes de Falla's The Three Cornered Hat and Stravinsky's Petrouchka. In the past decade Alban Gerhardt has established himself among the great cellists of our time. His sound is unmistakable, and his interpretations distinguish themselves with their great originality. The cello starts singing under his hands, known literature gets newly discovered, unknown works come to life. The fortunate combination of his unerring musical instinct, intense emotionality and a very natural, arresting stage presence fascinate his growing audiences. A special interest of his is to break with old listening and concert habits and to open classical music to a younger audience.

Live Bait: True Stories from Real People
November 27, 2009

Don't you love a happy ending? Whether it makes you laugh, makes you cry, or perhaps overwhelms with a whole different emotion, a happy ending always leaves you feeling satisfied.

If you have a story that is in any way, shape, or form related to our September theme, *"Happy Endings,"* then come on down to *LIVE BAIT* and share it. Or just come and watch others share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door (come a little early, sign-up space is limited), and when it's your time, we'll call your name. It's that easy. No notes, no rants, just tell your story like you're telling your friends over a couple of drinks. There is a five-six minute time limit, please respect it.

Usually Live Bait is a late night event ... we have added a special Live Bait for the month of November called *LIVE BAIT: STORIES OF DEATH, NEAR-DEATH AND SURVIVAL * Death is a depressing subject. Death is a downer. Why focus on Death when Life, in all its glory, is begging to be embraced? Well, there are those who say that the closer we get to Death, the more we truly appreciate Life. Ask anyone who has been there, face to face with the Grim Reaper, and they'll tell you.
