ELGAR Cello Concerto STRAVINSKY Petrouchka
Conducted by Music Director Larry Rachleff and hosted by NBC10's news anchor Patrice Wood, the Rush Hour concerts take place at VMA in Providence on specific early Friday evenings throughout the season. StrategicPoint Investment Advisors underwrites the Rush Hour Series. These concerts begin at 6:30 and last approximately 75 minutes, with repertoire selected from the full-length Classical Series concerts the Orchestra will perform on the following evenings. Informality is the key to this series. The concert ambiance is relaxed with Larry and Patrice talking about the music as the concert progresses. At the end of each concert Larry comes back onstage for a question and answer session with audience members.

In the past decade Alban Gerhardt has established himself among the great cellists of our time. His sound is unmistakable, and his interpretations distinguish themselves with their great originality. The cello starts singing under his hands, known literature gets newly discovered, unknown works come to life. The fortunate combination of his unerring musical instinct, intense emotionality and a very natural, arresting stage presence fascinate his growing audiences. A special interest of his is to break with old listening and concert habits and to open classical music to a younger audience. For more information go to: albangerhardt.com
Reminder:
The Philharmonic has shuttle buses that run before and after every Saturday night Classical concert. The buses loop around the State House picking up concert goers who park in the Smith Street lots and on the streets around the State House and VMA. The buses remain available and will return patrons to their parking areas following Larry's post-concert conversations. So, if you haven't attended a post-concert conversation, please do - they're informative and entertaining. This season, in addition to bringing the guest soloist back onstage, Larry will introduce a member of the Orchestra to the audience, too. | |

About Paul Murphy
Paul was a much loved and admired guitarist from Rhode Island. He performed professionally in a wide variety of styles from jazz to rock to R&B and funk, Celtic/folk and blues, working in bands with the most celebrated musicians of his time which included Greg Abate, Duke Robillard, and James Montgomery.
When he died in 1994, from a cerebral embolism while on tour in Brazil with the Duke Robillard Band, his fellow musicians and many fans wanted to honor him with a concert in his memory. His family felt that it would be appropriate to establish a scholarship fund in Paul's name to support young musicians at the Philharmonic Music School. The school soon established the Paul Murphy Touring Ensemble, which is in its 15th year, and his sister, Susan, has continued to spearhead a series of concerts in his honor.
The Paul Murphy Memorial Concerts are a legacy, supporting young musicians in Rhode Island. To date, this benefit has raised over $10,000 to support young musicians.
