Orlando-Sentinel Readers Respond to Angelo Falcón's State of the Union Address Critique

On January 28th, the Orlando Sentinel published my essay, "Latinos and President Obana's State of the Union Address," under the title of "Latinos left out of Obama's State of the Union speech," in their blog, Hispanosphere, edited by Victor Manuel Ramos. I thought you would find the initial reader comments of interest.

---Angelo Falcón

Mr. Falcon:

With all due respect but you are misleading the readers. First, the Obama's speech was never outline to discuss any particular latino or hispanic issues. It is the "State of the Union". Second, not only he did not talk about latino, he did not mention de Asians, Jews, Europeans or any other race, nation or ethnic group around the world. Third, is he did want to talk about latinos or the hispanic community he would probably need a whole week and not only 70 minutes...Again Mr. Falcon, your comments are unwise.

Mr. Falcon,

Sorry to tell you, but Obama forgot to mention white people, too. You think he might be color blind?

Do you and "your people" really need a special invitation to politics of "your" nation? Or do you feel like this land is somebody else's?

Methinks you, sire, are a racist of the worst kind. You are victimized only by your own prejudices.

Well nothing about immigration and , nothing about Latino there is your answer. But you need to understand that the party of "NO , the tea party , republicans and some dixicrats are not making any easy either for the average Joe or President Obama. Unless is a collaboration from from the republican , there is not going to be any immigration at moment.

Mr. Falcon,

I would have to agree with the opinion that, you are misleading readers. We must be responsible when we choose to publish articles like this one. You said it yourself that he has appointed the greatest number of Latinos in senior positions. Latinos do exist.... we exist to the point that we are involved in all levels of government and policy that we do not need to be addressed specifically in a speech as Latino.

Mr Falcon}} You would be happy to know that the Justice Department sued Osceola county to go to single member districts created to help Hispanics win office. Blacks were asked to get on the minority bus and go to the back of the bus-again..

Thank you Mr. Falcon, your statement "...there was a contradictory quality to the various initiatives the President outlined. He proposed new programs that would require new spending, while at the same time saying that he is "prepared to freeze government spending for three years" serves to prove something that was discussed during the campagin by the running mate, Biden, when he said that paying higher taxes was the patriotic thing to do.

I am not a rocket scientists but how can you create jobs if you freeze spending? Also, the involvement overseas in the war effort and now Haiti costs us lots of money. How to we recoup that money AND create jobs AND pass healthcare and immigration reform WITHOUT increasing taxes?

.

The Feds are going to invest 1.25 Billion for Fast Rail in Florida, and the State will have to inject similar amounts. If we keep printing and spending money eventually we will have to pay it all back. I forecast a TAX INCREASE in coming years if not by the end of this one.

Obiden, Pelosi and Reid were elected by the masses who wanted change, in the midst of a recession, and they have not done anything significant as of yet, spend money and appoint Sonia Sotomayor. But then again, Bush appointed many Hispanics to all levels of government so where is the promised change?

Falcon, you should be intelligent enough to realize that appointing hispanos and dealing with the status of Puerto Rico ARE NOT PRIORITIES in Washington DC. Maybe in your district they are, but the USA has bigger problems.

If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!

I did not watch the speech, period, but I can tell you dont expect nada from the Obama administration as he himself does not know what he is talking about!! That fast train is going to cost plenty and bring earthquakes and tsunamis as Florida lies flat on sand!! Heaven help us!! Besides the lies they tell us , the reason is to do away with independence!! Big brother is here and he is not nice!!!

I guess he had more important issues, like his political survival, to concentrate on. I thought the speech was one of the most negative defensive state of the unions I have ever heard. Guess it takes more than soaring oratory to actually lead. But that is what you get when you elect a novice junior senator to fill the most important position in the planet.

This President has appointed the greatest number of Latinos to senior positions in the White House and the rest of the federal government of any President.

Really? Where is the source for this? If this is true, why is the author whining about a speech?

Obama doesn't convince me. I am willing to bet he doesn't even like nascar or country music.

Hi,

Yes, I agree with people who says this man is sending the wrong message to the people. The president's speech wasn't about any particular race or group of people. That was a speech about getting the country's people back to work again, health care and getting both republican party and the democratic party's to start working together for the good of the country. President Obama has appointed more Spanish speaking people than any other president. He had no right to give any group any special rights above other American people. We are all Americans, sir. I suggest you think before you speak to see if anyone else is getting something your group is not getting. Dol
