Residents of Central Falls and members of concerned organizations will hold a community forum to discuss proposed receivership plans at 6:30pm on Monday June 7th at Clay Street, Central Falls, RI 02863.

Central Falls businesses, community organizations, community residents, and congregations have come together to oppose the receivership.   These organizations have formed the Coalition to Take Back Our City which is sponsoring the Community Forum.

The Coalition to Take Back Our City strongly opposes a firm of non-elected lawyers making decisions about Central Falls that directly affect residents and local businesses.   The Coalition to Take Back Our City is concerned about possible effects on parks and recreation services, libraries, and schools.  They are concerned that public safety may be affected by changing police and fire departments.  As tax payers and voters, they demand their right to a democracy in Central Falls.

Camilo Viveiros, executive director of Rhode Island Jobs with Justice said, “The solution when cities reach financial crisis is not to remove the democratic process. The decision to send the city to receivership was made behind closed doors.  Central Falls residents deserve more democracy, not less. ”

Heiny Maldonado of Fuerza Laboral said, “It is unfair to residents of Central Falls to unilaterally and undemocratically increase taxes and put at risk important resources that make our City safe.”

Amaryllis Rodriguez who has lived in Central Falls for the past twenty years said, “The proposed receivership plan punishes community members by taking away our democratic voice.  We can’t accept unilateral cuts that harm our families’ well-being and take away the community’s say in how the city is governed. Cuts to crucial services are a life and death matter for Central Falls community members.  We don’t want to see an increase in EMS response times.  We support our police and firefighters.”

Concerned members of the public will also attend the Superior Court hearing to appoint a permanent receiver for Central Falls at 9am on Wednesday June 9th.  The Superior Court is located at 250 Benefit Street, Providence.
