OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES: El Museo del Barrio’s Rentals Manager will play a leadership role in El Museo’s Development Department by helping to generate significant income through the rental of El Museo facilities. The Rentals Manager will also provide back up support to El Museo’s in-house special events activities and will assist with other elements of El Museo’s activities as needed. The Rentals Manager will be a dynamic, proactive, creative, sales-oriented individual committed to filling El Museo’s calendar with earned income revenue. He or she will be responsible for making every effort to rent every available space at El Museo as often as possible. These spaces include, but may not be limited to, El Museo’s galleries, 599-seat theater, café, lobby, courtyard and talleres (third floor arts education studios). This position is primarily sales oriented and the successful candidate will bring expertise in salespersonship, preferably in a for-profit setting, to El Museo. Due to the on-demand nature of this position, the Rentals Manager must be very flexible in terms of schedule, prepared to work early, late and weekends as needed. It is New York City's only major museum with this focus and the City's leading educator in Latino, Latin American and Caribbean art and culture. El Museo was founded in 1969 by artist-educator Raphael Montanez Ortiz in response to the interests of Puerto Rican educators, artists and others in East Harlem's Spanish-speaking el barrio who were concerned that their cultural experience was not being represented by New York's major museums. El Museo now maintains the most comprehensive permanent collection of Latino art in the country: the 6,500 objects range from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary works by Latino artists. Through its internationally recognized exhibitions; performing arts, education, and family and public programs; and free cultural celebrations; El Museo welcomes visitors of all backgrounds and serves over 114,000 people annually, of which 57,000 attend education and public programs.
