Rhode Island Monthly Magazine
George Wein's Folk Festival 50
Festival founder George Wein came out of retirement at age eighty-three to save this nearly cancelled show. The least the rest of us can do? Show up at Fort Adams State Park to help make sure it lives on for another fifty years. Today's up-and-comers, including The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes and Iron and Wine, share the stage with legendary folk crooners like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. And don't miss Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Deer Tick or The Low Anthem, three (much-buzzed about) bands on the lineup with Rhode Island roots.
The Details: Aug. 1 and 2. 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (both days). $15-$125. Fort Adams State Park, Harrison Ave., Newport, 800-514-3849,

Patriots Training Camp
Nothing at Gillette Stadium comes cheap. Except training camp, where you can watch Brady, Moss and Bruschi get back into their finest form without paying a cent (even parking is free). Afterward, drop the money you just saved at the new "man mall," err.. Patriot Place, where you'll find the expected pro shop, hall of fame and burger joints, along with atypical stadium offerings such as a spa, Victoria's Secret and a wine bar.
The Details: July 30 to Aug. 18. Check the website for specific practice times, which are subject to change. Free. Gillette Stadium, Rte. 1, Foxborough, Mass., 508-549-0001,

Rhode Island International Film Festival

A can't-miss for any movie buff, this festival screens 200 shorts, features and documentaries by filmmakers from fifty-seven countries over the course of six days. It's best known for its stellar lineup of short films, which often go on to Academy Award consideration. Other highlights this year include Garbage Dreams, a documentary about three teens living outside Cairo in the world's largest garbage village and Fifty Dead Men Walking, a flick about a young IRA spy starring Jim Sturgess and Ben Kingsley.
The Details: Aug. 4 to 9. Visit website for screening times and ticket prices. Locations throughout Rhode Island,

Trinity Rep Radio Theater Live
Go to enough shows at Trinity Rep and the resident actors start to feel like your friends. And the four months between seasons is a long time to go without seeing your pals. Which is why we're thrilled to get to see them in a rare summer performance. For the first time ever, the theater presents a live taping of the radio show it produces in conjunction with WRNI. Actors including Joe Wilson, Jr., Janice Duclos, Stephen Berenson and Phyllis Kay read excerpts from and discuss Thornton Wilder's beloved portrait of Newport,
Theophilus North. Proceeds benefit Trinity Rep Radio Theater.
The Details: Aug. 6. 6 p.m. $50. Jane Pickens Theater, 49 Touro St., Newport, 351-4242,

Little Compton Antiques Festival

The sprawling open landscapes and unadulterated beauty of LC transport us to much simpler times. So the town's a fitting setting for this weekend's antique festival, which brings more than fifty vendors (and their soon-to-be treasured finds) to Sakonnet Vineyards. A portion of the proceeds benefit nonprofit
Preserve Rhode Island.
